The back of the Pixel 2 is made from aluminum with a thin “premium coating” of plastic and has a top section made from glass to provide wireless transmissivity. Unlike the original Pixel, which was simply an enlarged version of the Pixel design with no other changes. The big difference here is that the Pixel 2 has a more traditional 16:9 aspect ratio, while the 2 XL has an 18:9 aspect ratio, making it easier to hold.
